Jorge Hernandez, the Vice President of Mortage Lending, helps clients secure home loans considering their long-term goals, down payment, employment, and credit history. He assists first-time buyers, move-up buyers, and investors during the application, approval, and closing process.
What sort of purpose do you feel in your job and/or why do you believe your line of work is important and meaningful?
I love helping families and individuals achieve their homeownership dreams and real estate investment goals. It is very rewarding to help people reach an objective. There is a lot of information available online about residential finance but sometimes people need personal/human guidance and especially someone they can trust.
What is the most exciting part of your day-to-day work?
I enjoy talking to new prospects and longtime clients every day. It is also very exciting to find solutions to complex loan scenarios and been able to deliver a loan approval.
What do you think the future of your industry looks like, let's say in 15 years? What impact will it be making? How will it be different from what you do now?
Change is the only constant. The housing industry in Southern California will remain strong and there will be plenty of changes. I believe the mortgage industry will become even more automated, but I believe my primary function will remain the same. I will continue to educate and guide those seeking mortgage financing assistance.
When did you decide you wanted to enter this field? What steps did you take to make that decision a reality?
I started in the mortgage industry as an assistant to a mortgage lender. It was a fast paced, ever-changing environment with a lot of opportunities to grow. I really enjoyed learning about the mortgage process and industry. I decided to go back to school, finish my degree in finance, and in 1999 I found employment with a local mortgage lender in Torrance.
For any students, age 12-18 who thinks your job sounds interesting, what advice would you give them to help them learn/train/explore your field?
I suggest they talk to their parents/guardians/relatives and ask questions about their plans of buying a house or how was the process of buying their first home/current home. If the students are interested in working with people, enjoy guiding/teaching, like math/numbers, then this is a field to explore.
Are there any organizations, communities, or movements that create synergy between you and others in your field, here in the city of Long Beach?
There are several trade organizations in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas dedicated to promoting synergy within the industry.
What makes Long Beach a great place to live and work as it relates to your industry?
I have lived in Long Beach for more than 30 years. I am very fortunate to live and work in this city. My family and I have great neighbors, schools, restaurants, and shops.
Long Beach has great people. Great people build great communities!
