Irish food may not be as commonplace as Mexican, Italian, and Japanese in Southern California restaurants, but when done right, it can be one of the most delicious cuisines around…especially when paired with drinks!

Corned Beef and Cabbage
Let’s start off with a classic. Eating Corned Beef and Cabbage on St. Patty’s Day is as traditional as eating candy on Halloween. But, what about every other day? It’s always a risky order because depending on the restaurant, straight corned beef can be either dry and botched or tender and tasty.
At EJ’s, it’s tender and tasty. Trust me—really, really good, juicy, tender corned beef. The cabbage is moist and a little sweet, and the mashed potatoes are buttery and cozy. Served with both gravy and spicy mustard, it’s a true Irish drinker’s delight!
Irish Egg Rolls
This is one of my favorite appetizers in all of Long Beach and you can’t get it anywhere besides EJ Malloy’s. It’s that delicious corned beef combined with sauerkraut, which is deep fried into an egg roll. Dip it in either thousand island dressing or spicy mustard and savor one of the tastiest treats you never knew you craved. Seriously, I get Irish Egg Rolls like every other time I go to EJ’s. And that’s a lot.
Shepherd’s Pie
If you need a break from corned beef but still want something hearty to offset your Jameson-rocks, try the Shepherd’s Pie. The ground beef is the key here. There’s a sweet and savory juice in the ground beef that reminds you of your grandma’s home cooking. The casserole is filled with all sorts of slow-cooked veggies to go along with the juicy meat and topped off with those mushy mashed potatoes. Some nights, you want to feel like you’re having a holiday dinner. If that night’s tonight, head to EJ Malloy’s Los Altos for some Shepherd’s Pie.
The Reuben
Ahhh the old classic. If I had a nickel for every time I ordered a Reuben…you just can’t go wrong. And in EJ’s case, you can go very right. This Irish gem has turned into an American classic and is an easy order for lunch or dinner. Corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island on rye. It’s the PB&J for cured meats. Served with a pickle and chips, it’s the perfect salty sandwich to pair with your whiskey.
