Poly (-9.5) vs. Millikan
It’s often forgotten that the last time Long Beach Poly High School lost a Moore League football game was in 2009 when Millikan beat them – not to brag. Can the Rams do it again?
Honestly, this is the most vulnerable Poly football has looked since they’re last loss in Moore League play. They’re offense has been horrific this season, even though my boy DeAngelo Chester got in the end zone twice last week like I said he would. He’s, without a doubt, got another one in him this week as well. Maybe they’re offense has been so bad because Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott came to practice with them over the summer. More like Duck Prescott.
But as bad as the offense has looked, the Poly defense has looked THAT good. They’re scary. They had ANOTHER pick-6 last week when Daylen Fuller took one to the house on the game’s opening play against Serra. The Jackrabbit D scores and doesn’t give up a lot of points, which is difficult to do when they’re always on the field.
Millikan got punched in the mouth two weeks ago when Aquinas came to DeHaven Stadium. I think the loss might have been a wakeup call. And I know there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the Poly defense, but the Rams defense ain’t no joke either. Linebacker Nik Lombardi is going to do something on that side of the ball to make a game changing play – bank that.
It’s been a struggle for the Millikan offense the first three weeks, but there’s just too much talent in the receiving core to not score touchdowns. Senior Jayden Davis says he owes me one from last game and senior Dylan Davis WILL have two TD’s this week. Upset of the week. Party like it’s 2009. Take Millikan moneyline. Millikan 21 Poly 13.
Wilson (-20.5) vs. Cabrillo
Did I not say coach Mark Ziegenhagen was going to turn this thing around? The Wilson Bruins started 0-2 and like the Undertaker once did on WWF, they rose from the dead.
Junior quarterback Ryan Pettway is performing like the Moore League Player of the Year candidate I thought he’d be and the offense is rolling after putting up a 52-spot on St. Anthony last week. There are weapons everywhere, but keep an eye out for running back Dillon Harris. Senior Zach Dolphin had three touchdowns last week, but I think it’s Harris’ turn for the hat trick this week against Cabrillo.
The Jags finally came through for me last week, covering the spread against Compton Centennial 33-0. Senior Feso Kaowili had a freakin’ day with three touchdowns including a 95-yard pick-6, which I saw on Roggin’s Heroes after Sunday Night Football on NBC – pretty sick. That show is brutal, but it’s always nice to see a Long Beach kid on TV.
I just don’t think Cabrillo has the horses to stay with Wilson this week, especially with the way Logan Ziegenhagen and the Bruin defense has looked the last few games. Cabrillo QB Brandon Vasquez will have a touchdown toss, but that might be it. Take Wilson to cover 20.5 in the Lock of the Week. Wilson 41 Cabrillo 7.
Jordan vs. Lakewood (-13.5)
Three in a row for Jordan! Get off the tracks when the J-Train’s coming thru. I said the Panthers may never lose again and I meant it. If we look back in the archives, I said the Panthers go as Cincinnati Bengals receiver and Jordan alum John Ross goes. Honestly, it might be the opposite. Jordan got another W last week then Ross reeled in the first TD reception of his career in a win over the Indianapolis Colts – weird.
TOUGH matchup with Lakewood and Sebastian Kronberger this week, though. You can’t really stop Kronberger, you just have to hope he doesn’t rush for 500 yards. I mean he’s always going to get his. Lakewood’s coming off a tough loss to Corona del Mar last week, but you can expect head coach Mike Christensen to fix that. Kronberger goes off for two TD’s and James Voorhies gets in the end zone as well.
If Josh Palu and the Lakewood defensive line can stop Jordan running back DeShon Harris then maybe they can snap Jordan’s streak. I just don’t see that happening. Harris gets in the end zone twice and senior Aaron Savage has the game-winning score. The J-Train rolls on. Jordan 35 Lakewood 34.
Compton (-6.5) vs. Gardena
I’ve been all-in on Compton since day one. My A1 since day one and yet people still wonder why they’re undefeated…They’re 3-0 right now because they’re talented. And people forget that they run the wing-T, which is tough to stop, so they have the X’s and O’s AND the Jimmy’s and Joe’s. That’s a lethal combo, folks.
I know quite a bit about the city of Gardena – the real Dirty Dena. They have a decent football program, but they haven’t played anybody like the buzz saw that is Compton football. I mean Gardena just beat Beverly Hills, but who even goes to that school? Jack Nicholson’s great-grandchildren? Those aren’t athletes.
Expect senior Terrance Pratt, who may or may not be related to Chris Pratt, to have an absolute day in this one. I’m thinking 200 yards on the ground and two TD’s – bet. Compton covers in a high scoring affair. Compton 40 Gardena 33.
St. Anthony vs. Gahr (-13.5)
The Purple People Eaters have to get on the board one of these weeks. They’re 0-4 so far, but that just means they’re due. Look at the San Diego (RIPIP) Chargers the last like 25 years. They seem to start 0-4 every year, but somehow they’re forever in playoff contention.
In 2016, St. Anthony started its CIF-SS championship playoff run with a win over Gahr on a last second field goal by Eamon Pool-Harris. Does that sound familiar? Well St. Anthony hosts Gahr this week and Pool-Harris is still on the squad like a younger version of Perry Ellis. History tends to repeat itself like the "Hangover" movies.
Champ Rodriguez will go off this week for St. Anthony with two interceptions and one TD catch. Don’t ever bet against my boys – Take the Saints. St. Anthony 28 Gahr 24.
