Cabrillo (-3.5) vs. Bellflower
It’s a transition year for Cabrillo (again), but this time it looks like they found the right fit in new head coach Mike Ulufale. He wants to be there and this is the first time that’s been the case in a while. The Jags are HUGE up front and I feel like they will have no problem running the football down Bellflower’s throat with running back Fesoeh Kaowili.
But I like Bellflower. Not the city, obviously, but the school and their new head coach Woodie Grayson. Grayson is a proven winner after coming from Valley Christian where he won a CIF-SS Division 9 championship two seasons ago. Bellflower football has been horrific their last two seasons, but Grayson might’ve attracted more talent to the school. After all, all of the good players from Bellflower can’t go to St. John Bosco because Bosco gets their players from everywhere else.
Cabrillo’s favored by 3.5 points. Take Cabrillo with the points. Cabrillo 26 Bellflower 16.
Jordan vs. Aliso Niguel (-20.5)
The Jordan Panthers were bad last season. Like 0-10 bad. But what do we do? We bounce back. Big Sean did it, the Philadelphia Eagles did it last season, even the Cleveland Cavaliers did it when Ty Lue took over the team in the 2015-2016 season. I believe first-year head coach Tim Wedlow can be the Ty Lue of Jordan football.
Jordan alum and Cincinnati Bengals receiver John Ross III didn’t have a catch last season, matching his alma mater’s win total. I’m not blaming him, but there’s no way Ross doesn’t have less than three catches this season so if that tells us anything, Jordan will win three or more games. Just not this one.
Take Jordan with the points. Aliso Niguel won’t win by 21. Aliso Niguel 41 Jordan 26.
Compton (-27.5) vs. Compton Centennial
Honestly, I didn’t know Compton Centennial existed until about 20 minutes ago. But I do know the Compton Tarbabes exist and they’ll be good this season.
People forget Compton runs the Wing-T offense and it’s impossible to stop even though you know it’s coming. Head coach Calvin Bryant has been running it for years and always has a stud at the running back position. He had James McConico way back when, last year it was Christian Swint (our guy), this year they have a bunch of dudes. Terrance Pratt, Niles Hibbert, Jaheim Williams should all get touches, good luck stopping them.
Tarbabes by a billion. We all know the sequel isn’t better than the original. Compton 40 Compton Centennial 6.
Millikan (-6.5) at Carson
Millikan has been talented but young for years – now, they’re just talented.
The Rams have the best wide receiving core in CIF-SS Division 7, if not the entire area. Cal commit Malik Bradford is big (6’2” 210), physical, can run, and is a matchup nightmare. Great for guys like Zach Martin, Jayden Davis, and Dylan Davis on the other side of the field. They make it easy for junior quarterback Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell who threw for over 2,500 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. QCC might throw for 31 TD’s in week one.
A LOT of points will be scored. It’s tough to win at Carson, but take Millikan by two scores. Millikan 42 Carson 28.
Poly (-20.5) at Dorsey
Poly reloads. It doesn’t matter who’s coaching or who’s leaving, Poly football will be good.
The Jackrabbits have a set of twin receivers Keon and Kejuan Markham who are ridiculously similar, which is a great problem to have since both are ridiculously good. Sophomore quarterback CJ Montes will have four touchdown passes, two to each twin. And Poly should get one on defense as well. Damaje Yancey pick six – bank it.
This should be a walk-thru for Poly and first-year coach Stephen Barbee, with a big matchup coming next week against Narbonne. Poly 36 Dorsey 6.
Wilson vs. Mayfair (-2.5)
UCLA pitcher Zach Pettway told me his brother Ryan Pettway will win Moore League player of the year this season (inside information). Zach has never lied before so junior quarterback Ryan Pettway is going to have a BIG year. It’ll start in week one when Ryan torches the Mayfair defense.
Zecheriah Dolphin is an all-time name and there’s no way the senior wideout will have less than two TD’s this week. Wilson was young last season, but just by hanging out with head coach Mark Ziegenhagen, the Bruins instantly got better. That’s a fact.
While Mayfair continues to try to be a part of the city of Long Beach, even though they’re not, Wilson should handle them in a slight upset. Wilson Infinity Mayfair 0.
St. Anthony (-1.5) at Valencia
Take St. Anthony here. You can’t lose with a guy named Champ. Two-way player Champ Rodriguez has been at St. Anthony forever – at least that’s how it feels. The same goes for linemen Jake Buksa and Adrian Magana. The Saints are thin and young this season, but those guys are difference makers.
Expect a big game out of running back Donovan Castillo behind the big boys up front. St. Anthony favored by 1.5? St. Anthony 21 Valencia 10.
