Fun Fact: The Skinny House

The “Guinness Book of World Records” and “Ripley’s Believe it Or Not” both recognize a Long Beach home as the skinniest house in America. The house, which is located in Long Beach’s Rose Park neighborhood on Gladys Avenue—the street right past Rivera’s Mexican Restaurant off of Seventh Street—is just 10 feet wide. The long, three-story stucco house sits on a 10-by-50-foot lot.

A man named Newton P. Rummonds constructed the house in 1932. He acquired the land as payment for a $100 loan owed to him a year earlier. Someone had also bet him he couldn’t build a house on such thin dimensions.

The “skinny house” is a registered Long Beach historical landmark and another Long Beach fun fact. If you’re in the Rose Park area, it’s worth driving down Gladys Avenue and slowing down the car to snap a pic of this unique piece of architecture.
