The Art Theatre, located at 2025 E. 4th St., opened in 1925 as a single-screen silent movie house with an orchestra pit and a pipe organ inside! After the earthquake of 1933, the Art Theatre was remodeled to resemble an art deco style and in 2008, with new owners, it was completely remodeled based on the original blueprints.
When it first opened, there were 50 independent theaters in Long Beach. Today, The Art Theatre is the only remaining theater of its kind as it continues to host classic and current films, productions, operas, concerts and small, independent features. It also has a wine and coffee bar for moviegoers to enjoy. It has been voted the number one independent theater in Los Angeles.
