Get to the Root of the Problem

Many chew ice, especially to cool off from a hot day. Others grind their teeth at night without realizing it. But both of these can cause dental problems.

Cracked tooth syndrome is one of the most common problems that can occur regardless of how well one brushes or flosses their teeth. Many cracks gradually form due to wear and tear just from following a normal diet, but chewing on hard things like ice can accelerate the process.

Over time, the tooth gradually weakens and it is often confused as “bad bite.” The tooth hurts to pressure and becomes very sensitive to cold, which is a sign that it’s time to visit the dentist.

“These symptoms can be gradual or worsen quickly,” said Julie Basiago, co-owner of Basiago Family Dentistry. “It is important to have it checked as soon as symptoms become consistent for more than a couple of days.”

Early detection is crucial before the crack goes beyond the nerve, resulting in a root canal or tooth extraction. But if the crack is identified early, a crown can stop the progression of the crack and stop it from reaching the nerve chamber at the center of the tooth.

While it may be difficult for dentists to identify the exact location of a crack, dentists at Basiago Family Dentistry are experts at treating this condition. They’ll begin by running a series of tests and once the crack is identified, it will be successfully restored with a crown— just as long as the crack has not extended into the nerve.
