Alden Darby and the CFL Are Back!

“The Argos really goosed her last year, didn’t they?” ***Canadian accent***

The Canadian Football League season is back!!! And Long Beach’s favorite team is looking to repeat as Grey Cup champions. Yes, the Toronto Argonauts are shooting to be the first CFL team to go back-to-back since the 2009-2010 seasons.

Why did we, as LB natives, adopt the Argonauts? Because of Long Beach legend Alden Darby, aka the greatest Millikan High School football player of all time. And if you disagree, you’re wrong.

Darby wins everywhere he goes. In 2009, he helped Millikan beat Poly High School for the first time since 1985 and carried the Rams into the playoffs. Arizona State University became relevant again and won the Pac-12 South in 2013 when Darby was a First Team All-Conference performer at safety. And the Argonauts won their first Grey Cup since 2012 after he joined the team in the middle of the season. Shoot, he just recently partnered up with Nissan Downtown in Toronto and I guarantee he’ll put some people in the new 2018 Nissan Rogue Midnight Edition out there.

Before a knee injury ended his season, Darby had 18 tackles and one interception for a touchdown in seven starts for the Argonauts. He’s supposed to be a key piece in the secondary this season according to the Toronto media, but I don’t speak Canadian so I may have read that wrong.

So if you’re a football fan and are craving some contact this summer, keep an eye out for Darby and the Argonauts. They don’t play two-hand-touch like they do in the NFL. Their season begins this Friday, June 15 on the road against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Darby is really good on Fridays – just ask Poly.
