Things to Do This Cinco de Mayo

With mariachi hats, tacos, guacamole, and beer — or even tequila — Cinco De Mayo is often confused with Mexico’s Independence Day or as an excuse to go drinking with friends in Belmont Shore or downtown. But no matter the case, May 5 has turned into an American celebration embracing Mexican culture.

This year, the holiday lands on a weekend, giving everyone the opportunity to get their party on without worrying about work the next day. With so many specials on food and drinks, there is no choice but to take advantage and save a few extra dollars. From family-friendly events to an evening out with friends, here is your guide to celebrate throughout Long Beach:

Lola’s Mexican Cuisine

2030 E. 4th Street & 4140 Atlantic Avenue

Whether you find yourself in Retro Row or Bixby Knolls this Cinco de Mayo, both Lola’s Mexican Cuisine locations are hosting a celebration of the holiday. Filled with live music, margaritas and delicious food, the restaurant is jam-packed with celebrations throughout the day, making it a perfect family affair. In addition, the first 100 people to make a reservation for Saturday will receive a Lola’s 10-year anniversary pin.

Pie Bar

450 Pine Avenue

Dessert and alcohol are always a great idea! Especially when it’s the Pie Bar’s pie tacos and churros, margarita pie shots and beer and wine specials. From 12 p.m. to 10 p.m, the Pie Bar is hosting a Cinco de Pie-O event, where customers can enjoy buckets of Coronas on its outdoor patio. It’s a perfect event for family and friends that want to satisfy a spiked sweet tooth craving.

Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library

5870 Atlantic Avenue

Hosted at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, this Cinco de Mayo celebration not only embraces Mexican culture with fun activities but also historical presentations. From Folklorico dancers to Mariachis and special performances from JD Dance Company and the Latin American Student Society from Jordan High School, the community event aims for people to share their stories in what it was like living in another country. The family event is from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Red Leprechaun’s Cinco de Mayo Paddy'O Party

4000 E. Anaheim Street

Make your way down to Anaheim Street for an afternoon of Mexican favorites at The Red Leprechaun’s Cinco de Mayo Paddy’O Party. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., there will be a $5 menu with items ranging from chips and salsa, tri-tip steak tacos, margaritas and lager on tap. A DJ will also be spinning salsa music throughout the event, creating a great atmosphere for mingling.

The Crest

5935 Cherry Avenue

Starting at 5 p.m., The Crest, a gay bar in North Long Beach, will serve drink specials all day and will be transformed into a Latin party with cumbia, salsa, and rock en español music. Complimentary food will also be available from until 9 p.m.
