On Cinco de Mayo, Scott Williams, owner of Super Mex on Spring Street, thinks about founders Manuel and Socorro Orozco and Super Mex’s legacy.
This Cinco de Mayo, Super Mex on Spring will be celebrating its eight-year anniversary. However, Williams worked with the Orozcos since the Super Mex corporation began in 1974, and was the company’s first franchisee when he opened up the Spring Street location. Despite its franchise title, Williams says that he still offers that “tried-and-true” method of good food and a family-friendly atmosphere, which has made Super Mex on Spring a beloved East Long Beach treasure since its inception.
“I didn’t reinvent the wheel,” Williams said. “I’m just offering the original recipes in a family friendly, ‘Super’ clean restaurant environment. I’m offering what you’ve gotten in the last 40 years, why change it?”
On Cinco de Mayo, come celebrate with Super Mex on Spring by having a beer and the popular combination plates served with rice and beans.
“We have all the Mexican beers you can imagine,” Williams said. “And the great food keeps bringing back customers with their families.”
Super Mex’s taco shells are crisped on the grill, not fried, so they don’t crack in your hand. The meat in both the tacos and enchiladas are tastefully seasoned and deliver some of the juiciest meat in Long Beach. The dog-friendly patio is one of the most popular places to hang out in East Long Beach. Not to mention, there is plenty of parking in the Stater Bros. parking lot, where Super Mex is located.
Williams points to the superbly clean floors and well-manicured decorum — a portrait of the Orozcos hangs on the wall above a table. Surely, they would be proud of how their restaurant is doing in 2018.
“We don’t miss a beat,” Williams said.
